The Cecilian Singers - Naturally!
St. Wilfrids Church, 25 Church Road, Kibworth LE8 0NB
26th October 2019 7.30pm
It is amazing to discover just how much the natural world - field and fountain, moor and mountain; the birds and the bees - have inspired composers down the ages. THE CECILIAN SINGERS - NATURALLY! is a programme of music spanning 400 years of choral repertoire inspired by nature in all its glory.
We begin modestly enough with a quick trip around the world, courtesy of Ernst Toch's extraordinary Geographical Fugue. Elgar, Schumann and Mendelssohn, among others, take the great outdoors as their starting point. For the animal kingdom, we start with birds - and in one case we are dazzled by a whole aviary of them! While more obvious domestic creatures are included, we do also handle (very carefully) snakes and a hedgehog. The musical centre-piece is dramatic, vivid music by Craig McLeish to texts by the black American poet Langston Hughes about some of the world's major rivers.
We finish in light hearted mood: as Cole Porter has it:
It is nature , that's all,
Simply telling us to fall
Make sure you put this concert by this fabulous choir in your diary.
